Choose a Name for Your Pet and Learn to Respect It

Pet training starts when choosing a name for your new friend. So, pick a name that you love! A short name ending in a consonant is an excellent option to name your puppy, kitten or any other pet you may have. Giving him a name will help him or her know you are trying to call them. Pick names with strong emphasis at the end. You should know that changing the name of your pet once he or she becomes old could be a big challenge as they get used to their old name. If it is mandatory that you change your pet’s name, then make sure to associate it with something fun and positive.

Listen to Your Dog When He Needs Help

Successful pet training requires you to dedicate time and pay close attention to the needs of your pet. Sometimes your pet may become uncomfortable under different situations. You should not ignore him or her, as there must be a reason behind their discomfort. Ignoring the needs of your pet is a huge mistake that can make your training ineffective. For example, if your pet does not want to interact with certain people, you should not force him or her to do it. The same principle can be applied to food. Some dogs are particular in what they eat. So if your pet resists eating certain foods, please do not force him or her into eating.

Be Consistent in Your Pet Training

Consistency is key in every pet training program. It is critical to involve all members of your family in the training program so everybody knows how to handle your pet in case of misbehavior. If you are used to saying the command, “no” to your pet when he or she follows strangers, and then someone else say “yes” it confuses your pet. Consistency helps your pet know what is needed of him or her under different circumstances. Remember that your pet does what you tell him or her to do. There is nothing wrong about warning him when he misbehaves but it is ineffective when you are not consistent with your rules.

Have Achievable and Realistic Pet Training Goals

In pet training, you will never change the behavior of your pet in a single day. It takes time. Changing your pet’s behavior should include realistic goals. In the case of dogs, different breeds adapt and change under different time horizons. Learn to be patient and appreciate every time you succeed while training your pet. Always set realistic and achievable goals for you and your pet. as it is very unlikely to achieve all your goals and have a well-trained dog in a single week. Remember that this is a process. There are no magic tricks you can use while training your pet.

Reward Your Pet for Every Good Behavior shown

Rewarding your pet with positive reinforcement after every accomplishment is another secret for successful pet training. Rewards help your pet understand what they are getting right. What kind of rewards could you use? You can consider using rewards such as toys, treats, or even praise. Know that every interaction you have with your pet is a good learning opportunity for him. Also, you need to be aware when and when not to reward your pet. Bribery and reward are two different things. Do not bribe, but instead reward him for every good behavior.

Be Careful With the Amount of Freedom You Give Your Pet

Freedom is very important in pet training. If you give your pet too much freedom too soon, you could be leading him off the correct path. This is a common mistake most people do unknowingly. Too much freedom can make your pet misbehave, teach them destructive chewing and incorrect potty training. All access to empty or unoccupied rooms should be blocked. Let your pet use selected gates and other sections of the house. Whenever you cannot supervise your pet actively, you could use a crate, which aids in minimizing the need to tether your pet.

End Every Pet Training Session With Something Positive

If your pet has worked hard to complete his or her pet training session, end it with a positive reward. This helps your pet remember important lessons learned during the session. Your pet will also be excited to show up for the next training period. On the other hand, if you harass or scold your pet after the training session, getting him back to your next class will be a hassle. Instead, be kind to your pet by whistling a positive tune, or by calling him or her by their beautiful name. Praising your pet and avoiding negative punishment could help you end each training session in a positive way. You will see that your pet will be learning lots and will be excited to attend the next pet training session.
